The old building they tore down where you learned that Jim LaLone died

One positive side effect of writing a memoir is that it helps keep fresh certain details that might otherwise fade from memory.  A good example is the small structure next to the Queen of the Pantry flower building, referred to on page 32, that contained the plant's business office.  It had been turned into a neighborhood tavern where I learned of Jim LaLone's death in Vietnam.

Almost daily for years I would drive past the now vacant structure, slow down as I offered a quick salute in honor of my fallen classmate.  On a recent visit I was horrified to discover it being demolished.  I pulled over to take a picture from my car window.  Suddenly, a white pick-up with a Parks and Recreation logo on the door stops next to me. The driver rolled down her window and lamented, "we tried to stop it, but as you can see, we failed."

Even as I was saddened, even angered, at the sight, I was somewhat comforted in knowing I wasn't the only one.
